Peter Garrard

11 Sep - 26 Oct

Free entry

Artist Peter Garrard fell in love with clay at the tender age of twelve whilst at school, an inspiring new teacher took the reins of his art studies. He steadily built his ceramic skills and began to find his own creative voice before moving on to a first-class degree at Manchester Polytechnic. Since that time, Pete has continually created and impressive body of ceramic work and has taught in secondary and FE in Cheltenham, and now from his studio in Gloucester.

Inspiration has been wide-ranging, but because of the artist’s experiences during the Covid pandemic, he now works almost solely with the figure, particularly male, focussing on the human condition: surface strength and perfection, contrasted by inner turmoil and frailty.

In tandem to Pete’s body of ceramic work, he has always drawn and painted, experimenting with combining his love for intense colour and mark-making  that’s achievable in both ceramics and watercolours to create visual stories, portraits and figure studies.

In recent years Peter has exhibited with Incla.y in Cheltenham and with Apollo Queer Art in Lisbon, Madrid, Durban and London.
